  • Companies note complementary fit of product lines and geographic presence

HeidelbergCement completed its acquisition of London-based Hanson PLC on August 23, combining to make the second-largest heavy building materials company in the world.

The combined company, which has approximately 72,000 employees in more than 50 countries, begins its shared future under the motto "build2gether." Hanson, including brick and roof tile, as well as other North American divisions, pipe and precast, aggregates and paver products, will retain its name, operating as a part of the HeidelbergCement Group.

In a letter to Hanson employees, Dr. Bernd Scheifele, chairman of the managing board of HeidelbergCement, stated his anticipation of an exciting future:

"Together, HeidelbergCement and Hanson are closing the gap on the leading global players, as the market leader in aggregates and with leading positions in cement, concrete and further downstream activities. As a fully integrated building materials company, we are generating outstanding opportunities to strengthen the partnership with our customers."

Hanson Brick is North America's largest brick manufacturer, with approximately 1,600 employees and operations across the United States and Canada. The company provides its customers with superior selection and service, offering more than 1,000 styles of brick in five regional brick collections. Hanson Brick is based in Charlotte, N.C.

Hanson Brick is part of Hanson, one of the world's largest suppliers of heavy building materials to the construction industry. Hanson produces aggregates (crushed rock, sand and gravel), ready-mixed and precast concrete, asphalt and cement-related materials and a range of building products including concrete pipes, concrete pavers, tiles and clay bricks.

Hanson is part of the HeidelbergCement Group, which employs 70,000 people across five continents. Heidelberg has leading positions in concrete and heavy building products and is the global leader in aggregates.
